NetVirta's technology originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008, where fellow computer vision graduate students, Jeff Chen and Andy Eow, realized the tremendous opportunities that modern computer vision and smartphone proliferation allowed. An exploding population of smartphone users meant that cameras would be more universally ubiquitous than ever previously imagined. Jeff and Andy knew these smartphone-based cameras could be utilized to 3D scan the shapes of objects, including human body parts.

This 'ah-ha' moment propelled the MIT graduates to explore different applications and markets for 3D body scanning. Though the glamorous fashion industry exhibited glaring needs, the market was not ready for such technology. So instead, Jeff and Andy focused on addressing the needs of clients who demanded the highest degree of scanning accuracy: medical professionals seeking to 3D scan patients to create custom-fit orthoses and prostheses.

NetVirta's inaugural scanning app, CurveCapture®, entered the medical market in 2013 and achieved FDA Class II clearance by virtue of its precision accuracy, and remains the world's only FDA cleared smartphone technology for 3D body shape scanning today.
